This is a gospel song, and a song about true freedom.

The story of the lame man at the healing pool in John 5 was the initial inspiration. He waited to be cleansed and healed by the water, but could not get himself there because he was lame and no one would help him. Then came Jesus and completely scandalized everyone by saying, "take up your mat, and walk." This man no longer needed the water. Jesus had healed him. Jesus had saved him.

This song is about our need for our Savior. We couldn't get ourselves to the pool, but His death on the cross broke the chains that bound us to our sin and toiling. The angel pointing the women to the empty tomb proclaimed his conquering over death and in that we find freedom from death in the eternal sense.
